This year, The Fair of Málaga will be from 16th August to 24th 2008. It will be like always with the opening address and the spectacular display of fireworks to the edge of midnight on Friday, 15th August in La Malagueta beach. Like every year I will go and see the fireworks with my family and my friends.

I do not know what concerts there will be this year but last year, I went to the concert by Andy & Lucas at Málaga’s City Auditorium. I really loved it!

In addition, I went into many rides that were new for me and I ate candyfloss and buns.

I hope that you enjoyed it as much as me!

Goals commonly expressed by environmental scientists include:

In April people all over Spain come to Sevilla and celebrate the " Feria de Abril ". The people dance flamenco and they enjoy very much. They wear the typical andalusian costumes : " Flamenco dress " or " Traje corto ". The fair in april has its origin in a fair or exhibition of cattle celebrated at the end of the 19th century, in the year 1847. Now it has become one of the most famous fairs and the most visited one in Spain.

I am not going to go next year.

Holy Week Processions

In Andalucia, in spring, there is a popular celebration, with five centuries of history, the Holy Week Processions.

In this religious celebration, brotherhoods take part in processions that parade the streets of cities. The cortege is composed by two Nazarenes sections with people in robes and hoods, and two thrones where images represent moments of Christ's passion and death.

This year I have seen many processions and have taken part as a "penitent" in the "Sacred Diner". I have also gone to many confimations.

My Favourite City, Málaga!

I live in Málaga, a great city on the south coast of Spain. Málaga has a population of about 700.000 inhabitants.
Here teenagers have sports facilities and also public zones where older people can do open-air exercise. There are lots of discos, lots of cafés, lots of bars, lots of restaurants and a fairground.
And there are also a lot of shopping centres.
In summer, people go to the beach, while in winter people go to shopping centres or go ice-skating…
I’ve lived in Málaga since I was a baby. I hope I’ll still be living here when I am an old lady. Málaga is a very nice and interesting city!
Visit it!

What do you know about 1st May?

May Day can refer to different celebrations, but for most people May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the *labour momement .

* Labour movement is a term used to refer to the development of a collective organization of working people to campaign in their own interest for better treatment from their employers and political governments. These organizations whose purpose is representing the interests or workers and the working class are nowdays known as Labour Unions or Trade Unions.

History:

International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight- hour day, killing a dozen demonstrators. In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. These were so successful that May Day was formally recognized as an annual event in 1891.

Did you know that...?

It may seem strange to us nowadays that people had to fight for the eight-hour day, but during the Industrial Revolution ( end of 18th Century and 19th Century) in Britain the working day could range from 10 hours up to 16 hours for six days a week.

Women and children were granted the ten-hour day in 1847.

French workers won the twelve-hour day after the February revolution of 1848.

Labour Day around the world.

Although many countries celebrate Labour Day on May 1st, in the USA and Canada Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September.

Nowadays, Labour Day (May Day) on May, 1st is a national holiday in Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Italy, Jordan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Lebanin, Malaysia, México, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and Vietnam.

Málaga

Málaga is an Andalusian city on the south coast of Spain. Málaga has a population of about 600.000 or 700.000 inhabitants.
I´ve lived in Málaga all my life, seventeen years.
In Málaga people can do many things: you can practise sport if you like, you can go sailing, fishing, shopping, or you can go to the cinema, to museums, go sightseeing, etc.
Also, there are plenty of cafés and some of them are very entertaining for teenagers.
There are good sports and leisure facilities, too.
In Málaga I like the beaches, and the facilties because you can go to chiscos, to a sports centre or to a shopping centre and you can get anything you need.
However, I don´t like the dirt of the city

Málaga should improve the cleanliness of its streets.

Málaga

Málaga is in the South of Spain, in Andalucía. Málaga is a very populated city because of the beach, and of the weather. Many people visit Málaga because they have heard of its artists: Antonio Banderas and Pablo Ruiz Picasso, or to visit its fair and to see the Holy Week processions, too.

I've lived in Málaga since I was born.

In Málaga you can go to the country, you can visit the museums and you can also relax in its beaches.

I like Málaga for its people and for the beach.

In my opinion, Málaga is the best city to live in.

23rd April, Book Day

What do you know about BOOK DAY?
Read and learn about the history of BOOK DAY.

When do roses and books go together? The answer is on St George's Day. St George's Day is on 23rd April and people also call it BOOK DAY.
Every year, on 23rd April, people in Catalonia give each other books and roses in honour of St George. This tradition of giving roses began in Catalonia in the 15th century.
According to a Catalan legend, St George killed a dragon, and the dragon's blood turned into a rose bush. St George gave a rose from the bush to a princess, and once a year, men in Catalonia still give roses to women on this day.
But, how did books become part of the festival?
The answer is that both- Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare- died on 23rd April 1616, so because of this coincidence people began giving each other books on this day.
This custom became so popular that countries all over the world have started celebrating BOOK DAY as well.

In Catalonia, On 23rd April it is still a tradition to give a rose as a gift for every book sold.

* Did you know that?:
  • William Shakespeare was born on 23rd April 1564 and died on 23rd April 1616.
  • Inca Garcilaso de la Vega also died on 23rd April 1616.

International Women's Day.

Do you know...
...Why do we celebrate 8th March?

A century ago, on 8th March 1908, l29 women, working for the textile industry, died burnt.
They shut themselves in order to demand better working conditions and a shorter working day ( 10 hours a day).
Their demands were:
- A similar salary to that of men.
- A safer and healthier job.

The boss ordered to set fire to the factory in order to force women to get out.
Women preferred to die.

Two years later, in 1910, in memory of the dead working women, the II Women International Conference, held in Copenhague, declared 8th March as
"The International Day of Working Women".
